The Basilika St.Laurenz is built on the foundation walls of a temple at what was once the north east corner of the Roman settlement. The present building, which replaces an earlier basilica built in the 5th century, was constructed in stages. The oldest part is the 13th century tower which was erected using Roman building materials while the chancel and nave are from the 14th century. In the 1960s extensive archaeological investigations were carried out revealing the foundation walls of the previous buildings and confirming the 1800 year continuous history of the basilica.
