The Schlossmuseum in the 14th century Freistädter Schloss in the north east of the city has 19,000 exhibits showing the history and culture of the historic free city and the Muehlviertel region. The extensive collections are arranged in three groups; folk art and culture, handicrafts and metal working and glass painting from the 18th to the 20th century. The museum occupies the southern part of the castle and nine floors of the 50 metre high keep, which is part of the city fortifications. From the top of the keep there is a stunning view over Freistadt.
