Gloggnitz’s Schlossmuseum can be found in the castle which overlooks the town. The exhibits are, in part, from the collection of the late Franz Vigl who founded a museum dedicated to the local history of Schwarzatal and Semmering between 1938 and 1939. Unfortunately, in 1945 the collection was plundered and many items were lost, including the most valuable and rare. The present museum was opened in the vestry and oratorium of the castle, a former Benedictine abbey, in 1978. The focus, not surprisingly, is on the history of the Benedictines in Gloggnitz between 1the founding of the abbey in 1094 and its dissolution in 1803. The permanent collections are supplemented by frequent special exhibitions.
