The Congress Casino Baden is housed in a former nursing home built in 1886 by the architects Eugen Fassbender and Maximilian Kat. The building stands on the site of the oldest Roman thermal spring site in Baden and the waters have been taken here over the centuries although nothing remains of the older structures now. The casino opened here for the first time in 1934 but after the war, from 1945 to 1955, the building was used by the Russians as a meeting centre. After the Russians left, the house was repaired and, for a number of years, served as venue for various events in the city. The present casino dates from 1995 and is the largest in Europe.
