The Benediktinerstift Göttweig, founded in the 11th century, is set on a 260 metre hilltop with commending views over the surrounding countryside. The monastery complex was steadily expanded and rebuilt over the centuries and some 17th century features still survive although most of the surviving structure is the result of a Baroque makeover by Lukas von Hildebrandt. The abbey is a treasure house of art and architecture with paintings, sculptures, frescos, stucco work, tapestries, prints and a colossal library of over 300,000 books. It is also possible to view the Imperial Apartments containing period furniture.
