The Babenberger-Burgruine was built about 1050 by the Babenberg on the Schlossberg in Thunau. Leopold II lived here from 1075 to 1095 and his son, Leopold III (The Holy), the patron of Lower Austria, was born here and spent his youth in Gars. The formidable stronghold, which overlooks Gars, withstood all hostilities but finally, in about 1800, it was abandoned because it became a tax burden on the owners. In 1996 the building passed into the possession of the municipality of Gars and nowadays it is used as an open air concert venue.
