Schloss Arstetten is first documented in the 13th century although it almost certainly dates from earlier times. It is for its association with the Austrian emperors that it is most famous. Emperor Franz I acquired the castle in 1823 and was later owned by Franz Carl and the unfortunate Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. The building passed into the hands of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie but in 1914 both were murdered by anarchists in Sarajevo. The museum in the castle opened in 1982 to commemorate the life of the assassinated couple.
