The ancient Stift Ardagger was established in 1049 by Emperor Heinrich III but was dissolved in 1784. The abbey’s church is a masterful example of Baroque architecture delightfully containing many earlier features. Very many features of the first Romanesque church remain, especially the crypt, despite remodelling in the 16th century. The outstanding 12th century Margaretafenster window shows a vivid depiction of the martyrdom of St. Margaret. There is a remarkably sophisticated sun dial on the exterior which was only uncovered and renovated in the 20th century.
