The foundation stone of the Erzbischöfliches Seminar was laid on 20th July 1880 and by 16th November of the same year the tower cross was already in place. The elegant and imposing building is eighty six metres long and seventy five metres deep and at one time, in the 1930’s, housed over three hundred students. The seminary, which was inaugurated on 2nd October 1881 by Archbishop Cölestin Joseph Ganglbauer, was founded to train priests for the Diocese of Vienna, of which about forty percent came from the establishment.
