The Archaeological Museum Carnuntinum, opened by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1904, is located in a villa built in the style of a Roman country house, by the architects Friedrich Ohmann and August Kirstein. The museum houses the finds discovered during the excavation of the Roman city of Carnuntum including jewellery, tools, arms, sculptures and cult objects. The most precious exhibit is a Mithraic shrine, a religion particularly favoured by Roman soldiers. There is also a fine bust of Julia Diomina whosw was the wife of Emperor Septemius Severus.
