The oldest structural elements of the mediaeval Schloss Aggstein date from around the year 1200 and the castle is first mentioned in 1256. The castle, which stands in a spectacular position overlooking the Danube Valley, changed hands a number of times over the centuries finally falling into ruins. It was renovated in the 19th century. Today it is open to visitors all year round to explore the ruins, see the exhibitions and marvel at the breathtaking views.
