Although the village of Hochwolkersdorf is relatively isolated it is worth a visit to see the Gedenkraum 1945 which documents the negotiations with the Soviet Army over the peaceful surrender of Vienna at the end of the Second World War. Dr. Karl Renner, the first Chancellor of the First Republic, was brought here to negotiate Austria’s future from his retreat in Gloggnitz. He was joined by Oberfeldwebel Ferdinand Käs from the Astrian resistance movement who negotiated the cessation of hostilities. The discussions with the Soviet representative General Zeltin led to the constitution of a provisional government and the reinstatement of the Republic of Austria. These circumstances make Hochwolkersdorf the birth place of the Second Republic.
