Tiergarten Schönbrunn is not only the world’s oldest zoo but also one of the most modern. Giant Pandas, koalas and the first elephant born in Europe using artificial insemination are among the animal attractions; additions of an ecosystem based on the Borneo rainforest, an aquarium enabling spectators to walk under a simulation of the Amazon in flood and a polarium, for animals of the Arctic region, make this a far more intriguing visit than most zoos. The beautiful octagonal pavilion, where Franz Stephan and his wife would breakfast amongst the animals, is decorated with frescoes by Guglielmi.
