Strudel, Burnacini and Fischer von Erlach were amongst some of those who worked on the ‘Pestsäule’, erected to commemorate the ending of the plague epidemic of 1679. Commissioned by Emperor Leopold I, it was originally a wooden monument, but after several attempts it was eventually replaced in 1693 by the one that is seen today. Showing the Holy Trinity figure, angel sculptures and the kneeling emperor Leopold praying to a sculpture of faith the memorial column is a fantastic example of the High Baroque design which influenced the whole Austrian region.
