This building, by the architect Adolf Loos, caused a furore upon its completion in 1911. Its surprisingly stark façade has been nicknamed the ‘house without eyebrows’ because of Loos’ refusal to adorn its window bays with stucco and lintels. Loos incurred the wrath of Emporer Franz Josef, who viewed the building as an absolute monstrosity, by using the construction as a protest against the grandiose style of the Hofburg. It was originally designed for the firm of master tailors Goldmann & Salatsch and it is still possible to marvel at its simple elegance.
