Although the Festung Hohensalzburg Fortress can be reached on foot, the best way to get up the mountain is using the funicular railway, the FestungsBahn, which climbs up a steep track from the Festingsgasse and through the Fortress walls. The FestungsBahn is the oldest funicular railway in Austria and was originally water powered, although nowadays it is powered conventionally by electricity. Travellers are rewarded by progressively more magnificent views of the Altstadt as the carriage ascends.
