The poet Georg Trakl was born in Salzburg and although trained as a pharmacist began publishing his poetry in his twenties. He died at the age of 27 during World War I in hospital in Krakow after committing suicide in a fit of depression. In his short life he produced a body of literature which is of the highest standard. A research and memorial centre can be found at the poet’s birthplace where personal documents, pieces of furniture from his family’s home and other literature can be seen.
