The building of the ‘Postsparkasse’ was designed in 1906 by Otto Wagner; a significant early work of modern architecture and his first ventures from Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism. Steel, concrete, glass and aluminium rivets give the building an impenetrable look but also provide a well-balanced fusion of form and functionality. More elaborate embellishments appear higher up the facade, such as statues of female angels. The atrium like main hall uses a large skylight to flood the heart of the building with natural light; it is one of Otto Wagner’s masterpieces, and one of the finest examples of Viennese Jugendstil.
