Now housed in the Schönborn Garden Palace, this museum was founded in 1895 and is intended to illustrate the relation of the environment, economy, history and society to the people and to make them contemplate their place in the world. Exhibits mainly cover the 17th to 19th centuries and describe the life and traditions of people living in the Alpine regions and areas along the Danube. Along with the traditional costumes, furniture and household items on display there are special exhibitions of folk art from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire as well as from as far afield as China.
