The Wallfahrtsbasilika was built in the 18th century on the site of a miraculous icon placed at the top of the Pöstlingberg by Ignaz Jobst in 1716 after it proved effective in curing Prince Gundomer von Starhemberg. The church, which was made a basilica minor in 1964 by Pope Paul VI, is the work of the Linz architect Johann Matthias Krinner. Inside the church there is a late 19th century fresco of the Coronation of the Virgin by Andreas Groll. Because of its spectacular location, the church is a popular place to get married.
