The Mauthausen Heimatmuseum is housed in the impressive Schloss Pragstein on the banks of the Danube which was once on a rocky island separated from the shore by a thread of water. The museum collections cover local history and archaeology from Neolithic times and the exhibits include paintings, local costumes, furniture and stuffed animals. A part of the museum is dedicated to the well-known steel cutter Professor Hans Gerstmayr (1882-1987) who is famous for crafting hunting knives, bracelets, steel ornaments and seals. There is a display of his works including drawings and tools.
