The Pernerinsel is a huge former industrial complex on an island in the Salzach River. The buildings were once the production facilities for the historic salt mine at Dürnberg but closed, after over a thousand years, in 1989. Nowadays it used for theatre productions of the Salzburg Festival, the International Summer Academy for Arts and more than thirty cultural initiatives in Hallein, like the Kulturforum Hallein. Besides the performance and exhibition spaces there are workshops for artists and artisans.
