Hitler was born in Braunau in 1889 and lived here until the age of three when the family moved to Passau. The street on which the house stands was renamed Adolf-Hitler-Strasse after the Anschluss in 1938 but reverted to its previous identity after the war. The house is now a workshop for the handicapped. Crafts made by the handicapped are sold in a store on the ground floor. It remains a place of pilgrimage for admirers and a venue for anti-Nazi demonstrators. Outside the building there is a plaque which reads in translation “For peace, freedom and democracy, never again Fascism, millions of dead admonish”.
