The 52 metre long historic steamship “Gisela”, designed and built by the English engineer Joseph John Ruston, came into service in 1872 to provide much needed transport on the Traunsee. Eventually, following the building of road and rail links between Traunkirchen and Ebensee, the ship became unprofitable and by 1919 was one of only two steamers still operating. Had it not been for the tourist industry no doubt the boat would no longer exists but today it is one of Gmunden’s main attractions. There is a cabin inside which was reserved for members of the Habsburg family who travelled to Bad Ischl on Gisela during their visits.
